What is the color gamut?
Before understanding 100% DCI-P3 LED display, let’s briefly introduce the color gamut. Color gamut is the range of colors that a screen can display or color space. The three most common color gamuts on the market are sRGB, NTSC, and DCI-P3. We often see a screen with a color gamut of 80% sRGB. It means that the color range that this screen can display occupies 80% of the area in the sRGB space.
What is sRGB?
sRGB is the most widely used color space on the market. The full name is standard Red Green Blue. Because the sRGB standard was customized earlier. Therefore, it has a smaller color gamut space and is only suitable for browsing the web. Moreover, sRGB has very little coverage of green, so the expression of some flowers and forests is very poor. Not suitable for use in the film industry.
What is NTSC?
NTSC means National Television Standards Committee. Although it covers a wider range than sRGB, the NTSC color gamut was developed for TVs and has been around for a long time, so it is no longer suitable for current Internet needs. 100% sRGB is approximately equal to 72% of the NTSC color gamut, but 72% NTSC is not equivalent to 100% sRGB, because the colors covered by 72% NTSC are not necessarily within the range covered by sRGB.
What is DCI-P3?
DCI stands for Digital Cinema Initiatives. Many people don’t know much about DCI-P3, which is a relatively new color standard used in digital cinema. The DIC-P3 color gamut takes the human visual experience as the starting point and matches all the color requirements that can be shown in the film as much as possible. In other words, it can be called a film-level color gamut standard. In general, DCI-P3 can better meet the human visual experience. And is suitable for digital film and TV post-production. In 2016 the UHD Alliance announced the Ultra High Definition rule that its devices must cover more than 90% of the DCI-P3 color space. Therefore, as long as it can cover more than 90% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, it is a super high-quality display.
100% DCI-P3 LED Display for Film Production
Maxtop XR series LED display can achieve 100% DCI-P3 coverage. How do we achieve it? The most important thing is the LED lamp, as well as LED product design and post-commissioning correction. Not all LED lamp manufacturers can do it with 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage. We have repeatedly tested the LED lamps of different manufacturers, and only one lamp factory can meet the color gamut coverage of 100% DCI-P3. For LED virtual studio applications, high ratio DCI-P3 color gamut coverage is very important and is directly related to film and TV post-production. The better the color gamut performance, the more accurate and true the output content will be.
However, it should be emphasized here that the color gamut coverage itself has no essential relationship with the material of the lamp. It is not that the gold wire lamp can reach 100% DCI-P3. The most important thing is the stricter lamp separation and color separation. Naturally, the price of lamps is relatively high. It will be about 300% more expensive than conventional ordinary LED lamps. At the same time, there are also higher requirements in the design of LED products. Of course, it is also inseparable from the cooperation of the system and the later correction and debugging.
